Using job aids to improve product training

Job aids or performance support tools are repositories of information, processes and perspectives that support work activities through guidance and direction. They are used as reference material to provide employees with on demand information which is not generally memorised. They can be a simple and effective tool to improve performance when used in the right scenario.

Let’s look at some scenarios where job aids can be applicable:
  1. When jobs require access to large amounts of data
  2. When the information isn’t complex enough for training and simple tips are sufficient
  3. For reinforcing training content and providing on job reference
  4. When the margin for error is minimal
  5. Employees are unavailable due to lack of time for training

But enough about what job aids are. Our focus here is more on using job aids for product training. More often than not, lot of the mentioned scenarios are the case with product training. For example, say you need to train your sales personnel on the features of your ever evolving range of products. Since there’s a lot of content and is changing all the time, it’s a good idea to provide job aids. But, consider the audience and the training objectives thoroughly before you use job aids, as they might not be appropriate in many cases. The idea is that you don’t always need a hi-fi, interactive course to provide effective product training.

So the next time you’re designing your training, consider job aids as a viable option. This simple and effective tool can save you a lot of money and be just as effective or even more as an expensive and hi-fi e-learning course.
