E-learning vendor selection

So, you have decided on using e-learning to deliver entire or part of your training. You have an e-learning strategy with clear objectives and expectations. What next?

You have to select the right vendor to outsource content development. This step is not as simple as it seems. In fact, it can turn out to be the most challenging one. There are tonnes of vendors out there claiming to be the leading providers of learning solutions, who seem to fit your requirements perfectly. But, things aren’t always what they seem to be.

Selecting the right vendor can be the difference in making your e-learning initiative a success. Here are some steps to help you narrow down your list of prospective vendors.

Vendor evaluation team
Create a team to help you evaluate the list of vendors your dealing with. An effective vendor evaluation team can eliminate frustrating delays in the selection process. The team should ideally consist of HR, IT, training and legal professionals.

Request for proposals (RFPs)
A request for proposal is critical to evaluate vendors in the selection process. A well-written RFP can be a great aid in helping you and your potential vendors to identify the outcomes and expectations for the project. Request for bids (RFBs) will get you the pricing of each vendor narrowing down the list to fit your budgets.

Selection process
  • Research vendors through websites and references to get all the information you might need on quality, domain experience, delivery, responsiveness etc.
  • Have vendors give demonstrations of their products.
  • Evaluate vendors on their ability to support your current and future learning requirements, expertise, infrastructure and financial stability.
  • Rank the vendors on their technology selection, experience, development process and certification.
This sort of a process will help you gain a clear understanding of your vendors’ abilities and help you make the right choice.
